A south Reno hotel casino is planning to leave NV Energy and acquire its electricity elsewhere.
  Â
Peppermill Casinos, Inc., filed its exit application with the Nevada Public Utilities Commission earlier this month. Peppermill Resort Spa Casino says it wants to leave NV Energy's northern Nevada company, Sierra Pacific, by March 1.
  Â
Three Las Vegas hotel casinos and the data storage company Switch have also recently filed applications to leave the utility.
  Â
The Peppermill application says it intends to obtain energy from Minnesota-based Cargill Power Markets.
  Â
The utilities staff will process the application and determine a fee that the company will be required to pay to exit. The fee is meant to protect the utility's remaining customers.
Dean Parker, Executive Facilities Director released this statement:
On June 7, The Peppermill Resort Spa Casino filed a letter of intent to leave NV Energy as a customer and pursue other energy sources. The Peppermill’s departure is subject to the approval of the regulatory authorities. The letter is the first step in a process that is expected to take months to complete. During this process, state regulators will determine appropriate terms and conditions pursuant to state stature to insure that The Peppermill’s departure is just and reasonable. Any cost that The Peppermill is responsible for will remain The Peppermill’s responsibility.Â
The Peppermill has a long track record of investing in the most sustainable and environmentally-friendly energy sources for our customers – including a recent $9.7 million investment in on-site geothermal heat generation for the hotel casino. We are committed to continuing that investment in responsible and renewable energy sources.
