A Nevada state lawmaker who drew national attention and the condemnation of elected officials in his own Republican party for saying he'd vote to reinstate slavery if that's what his constituents wanted has won a primary challenge.

Assemblyman Jim Wheeler defeated challenger Robin Reedy in Tuesday's GOP primary in District 39.

Reedy had a 20-year career in state government, where she worked in the state treasurer's office and Department of Business and Industry before she was tapped by former Gov. Jim Gibbons as his chief of staff.

Wheeler was first elected in 2012, when he defeated fellow incumbent lawmaker Kelly Kite of Minden.
