DACA Anniversary Brings Supporters Together in Nevada

It has been almost 5 years since applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program were accepted, and locals as well as Nevada state representatives are using the date to talk about the program's importance.

In Reno Tuesday morning, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada held a press conference to show their continued support of the program. "This anniversary comes at a perilous time for DACA," leaders wrote in a press release. They reference the Texas Attorney General's letter to the Trump administration, signed by 9 other states, asking for the program to be phased out.

The letter was written June 29th, and states that "If, by September 5, 2017, the Executive Branch agrees to rescind the June 15, 2012 DACA memorandum and not to renew or issue any new DACA or Expanded DACA permits in the future, then the plaintiffs that successfully challenged DAPA and Expanded DACA will voluntarily dismiss their lawsuit currently pending in the Southern District of Texas." In Reno Tuesday morning, PLAN emphasized their support of DACA and that they will continue to urge the current administration to protect the program.

Senator Cortez Masto participated town hall for DACA recipients and their families in Las Vegas Tuesday night. "There is no denying that DACA has had a significant impact on not only DACA recipients and their families but on the country as a whole," she released in a statement afterward.

Congresswoman Jacky  Rosen released a statement confirming her support of the program, and says that "Our diversity is one of our greatest assets, and DACA has helped keep families together while strengthening Nevada's economy and our communities." She says she "supports ongoing efforts in Congress to reach a bipartisan solution to protect DREAMers immediately."
