Current Sparks Fire Chief Chris Maples tells us that the former Sparks Fire Chief Andy Flock passed away on Saturday.
Andy Flock was hired as a volunteer at the fire department in February of 1983. He went full time in 1984. Fast forward to September 2013 and that's when he retired as the fire chief. He held that position for six and a half years, but he spent over 30 years there.
Chief Flock was appointed by Governor Jim Gibbons and reappointed by Governor Brian Sandoval to serve on the Nevada Commission of Homeland Security. He also spent 30 years serving in the Air National Guard and was an active volunteer in the community.
He also spent 30 years serving in the Air National Guard Fire Department.
Maples says that the team is in a "state of shock." "Chief Flock was an outstanding person that made a lasting impact on those who were fortunate enough to have known him and served under him," Chief Maples said.
"Chief Flock was truly a great man who put his heart and soul into making our city a better place. Our close-knit Sparks family will miss him terribly. We will continue to keep his wife Julie, son AJ, daughter Jamie and four grandchildren in our thoughts and prayers," Sparks Mayor Geno Martini said.
