Girls on the Run is all about inspiring young women.
"The mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident while integrating physical activity," said Executive Director Joy Heuer. "We talk about life skills like building confidence, character, compassion. We show them a sense of community, and are also physically active to show the benefits of moving."
It's a program a lot of these girls come back to every year. This will be Addison Guinan's third year with Girls on the Run.
"I like it because it's just so fun," she said. "And I love running and I love making new friends!"
Usually, hundreds of girls sign up for these sessions, but this Fall it's a little different. They're only taking 80 students, and new protocols are in place.
"Masks will be worn, temperatures will be checked, health questions will be asked," Heuer said. "We will keep social distancing. We're going to be very conscious about health concerns, but it will also be wonderful to be back in person."
All students in grades 3-5 in Washoe county are eligible. Groups meet Wednesdays and Saturdays and there's a virtual 5k to celebrate everyone's accomplishments.
"I think that the families that have signed up their girls are aching for some communication and presence around people so, we're excited about the season," Heuer said.
The next session starts on September 23 and registration is open until September 25.
