A longtime Reno teacher and area entertainment writer has died.
Mel Shields had been in hospice care the last few weeks after suffering kidney and infection issues.
He taught English at both Reno and McQueen High Schools. He also worked as an entertainment writer for many publications including the Sacramento Bee and Variety, covering everyone from Frank Sinatra and Bill Cosby, to Huey Lewis and Alice Cooper.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, Shields was originally from Montana.
He is survived by his brother.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
