Carson City Caucus Runs Smoothly

It has been a big week for Democrats in Nevada with early voting, a debate in Las Vegas, and Caucus day on Saturday. NV Dems have released final numbers for early voting. More than 38,000 people voted on Tuesday alone. 75,000 Caucus votes were cast over the 4 day early voting period. By comparison, CNN reports there was a total 82,000 votes during the last Presidential Caucus in 2016 and 118,000 in 2008. Party members at the Washoe Dems Crab Feed spoke about the early turnout.

Chatter at the Washoe Dems Crab Feed on Thursday revolved primarily around elections. Spokespeople in town were excited to talk, including Senator Tina smith, who is here on behalf of one of the presidential campaigns. “We are bringing people together that aren't just focusing on our differences but what unites us. And I think that I heard that spirit I heard in this room just a moment ago. Hundreds of people that have come together,” said Senator Smith.

While Democrats were hungry for crab, just days previous they were hungry to Caucus. 75,000 early votes were cast in early voting. Those numbers are seen as positive.  “It’s pretty amazing. We’re a growing city. There’s a lot of energy here in all of Northern Nevada. And I think people are fired up about the election,” said Reno City Council Member Jenny Brekhus. “It shows that they care. And it shows that they want to change the direction of this country,” said Dr. Jill Biden who is a presidential candidate’s wife. “It’s important that everyone votes and that everyone's vote is counted and people understand what the process is. That’s what gives the whole process integrity,” said Senator Smith.

After such a large early voting turnout, 900 volunteers are training to help with the actual Caucus on Saturday. Higher numbers from early voting could indicate higher turnout then as well. “Yes of course it’s important. I mean this is the system in Nevada and you have set up the Caucus system. So it's very complicated, so people have to be trained to do the job,” said Dr. Biden. “I’m really encouraged that there is the kind of in depth training and organizing that is happening to make sure that these Caucuses go off smoothly and that every vote is counted accurately,” said Senator Smith. “I think that most of the votes are probably in. But they will be complemented by a group on Saturday who like to Caucus. They like to hang out with their neighbors for this experience. But I think the turnout will be smaller,” said Council Member Brekhus.
