The Presidents Day weekend saw the biggest turnout at the weekend box office in weeks, all thanks to the power of love.
"One Love," that is.
The new Bob Marley biopic sang its way to $27.7 million domestically since Friday, and $45.6 million since its opening on Valentine's Day. By the end of Presidents Day, it is estimated to have made more than $51 million.
While critics were mixed on the film, amazing word of mouth from audiences seems to have it on a glide path to at least $100 million during its theatrical run in North America. If it reaches that goal, it will be the first movie released in 2024 to do so.
Overseas, the movie has made $29 million for a global total to date of more than $80 million, a gross that must already have studio executives jammin'.
Landing with a dull thud in second place amid a web of scathing reviews and abysmal audience reaction is "Madame Web," the latest bomb in Sony's live action "Spider-Man" universe, which exists outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe except for the few times they've crossed over, but nobody is sure if those crossovers are cannon.
It's all very confusing. What isn't, though, is this latest movie failing to weave much interest at the box office with a dreadful $15.2 million over the three-day weekend. It has made $23.4 million since Valentine's Day which isn't much better. It is expected to leg it out to $26 million by the end of Presidents Day.
For perspective on just how bad an opening this is, Sony's last live action "Spider-Verse" film "Morbius" is considered one of the most notorious flops of recent memory, and it opened to $39 million over three days, nearly triple what "Madame Web" managed.
In third place, after two weeks atop some very slow weekends, audiences remain largely undercover for Universal's big-budget spy action comedy "Argyle."
The movie, starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell among other marquee names, managed $4.7 million over three days in its third weekend. It is expected to have $37.3 million to its name by the end of Monday domestically, plus $40 million from elsewhere for a worldwide take of $77.3 million.
With a reported $200 million price tag, those numbers are definitely unfortunate, and the studio seems likely to revoke this would-be franchise's license to kill just as it gets out of the gate.
In fourth, families keep flocking to "Migration." In its ninth weekend the film actually moved up from fifth place and saw its grosses improve by nearly 28% with a take of $3.75 million.
The animated comedy is expected to have made more than $116 million in the U.S. by the end of the holiday weekend and has made $140 million overseas for a global total of more than $256 million.
Rounding out the top five is the Fathom Events special engagement "The Chosen: Season 4, Episodes Four Through Six."
The anthology of religiously themed episodes made $3.44 million over three days and should have $4.2 million to its name by the end of the holiday.
It has not been released overseas.
