After more than 40 years serving people in South Lake Tahoe during some of their hardest moments, the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League is closing its doors and passing its mission forward in a new way.

The longtime nonprofit announced it will cease operations and distribute its remaining charitable assets to Barton Health.

The funds will support cancer care and patient services in the community through the expansion of Barton Health’s cancer care programs.

Founded more than four decades ago, the Cancer League focused on helping people facing cancer through transportation services, advocacy, and volunteer work. Over the years, the organization supported families across the area and worked to fill gaps in care close to home.

“This decision was not made lightly,” said LaDonna Childress of the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League. “The Cancer League has always existed to serve our neighbors during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. We believe this transition is the responsible step to ensure our remaining resources continue to make a meaningful impact by supporting cancer care right here in our community.”

The donated funds will go toward Barton Health’s expanding cancer program. Barton Health, a member of the Cleveland Clinic Connected program, works with the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute to bring comprehensive oncology services to the South Shore.

“We are deeply honored by the Cancer League’s trust and generosity,” said Dr. Clint Purvance, president and CEO of Barton Health. “The South Lake Tahoe Cancer League has set a powerful example of compassion, service, and community commitment. Their legacy will live on through the patients we are able to serve locally as we build a cancer program designed around the needs of this community.”

Barton Health is currently investing in its cancer service line, including improved diagnostics and expanded access to chemotherapy locally.

Officials said the Cancer League’s contribution will help accelerate those efforts and strengthen cancer care in South Lake Tahoe for years to come.
