Bear Box Program

Alpine County, in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), is seeking resident applicants along the east slope of Alpine County for their 'Bear Box Grant' program.

Residents of the East Slope, which includes Mesa Vista, Woodfords, Markleville, Marklevillage, Hope Valley, Hung a Lei ti, Chambers Lane, and the Carson River Corridor, are said to be eligible to receive up to $2,200 from Alpine County for installing a bear-proof trash container, or "bear box."

Alpine County is able to install about 300 bear cages in the previously mentioned areas thanks to CDFW funds.

Due to the limited number of boxes available, it is recommended that interested residents apply as soon as possible. The program is open to qualified residents on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bear boxes must be installed by May 31, 2025, for residents to be eligible for the reimbursement.

Alpine County has created a list of authorized bear box suppliers and is accepting online applications via the Community Development Department's permitting system (iWorQ).
