On Wednesday night, Washoe County held a meeting in Hidden Valley to discuss the recent flood and cleanup efforts after the rainfall that shook up the neighborhood.

The meeting took place at the Hidden Valley Country Club.

The meeting was for the community to learn more about why the flood happened and what they've been doing to restore the area.

An additional goal for this meeting was to have people better understand why they don't build drainage for massive flash floods like the one the area recently experienced.

They also want people to understand where their houses are sitting and why this sort of thing happens.

Bethany Drysdale, communications manager for Washoe County, says, "Most of the cleanup has been done. The park is open. A lot of those drainage ditches and retention ponds have been cleaned out. So, you know, we never want a flash flood like this to happen, but when we get the regular amount of water that drops in that area, these ponds can't handle it."

Drysdale also pointed out, "Nobody can be fully prepared for an event like this. Two inches of water in an hour; it's just all the factors that came together. It's too much for any floodwater plan."

She also says, "We want people to come out of this understanding what we've done, why we've done it, and why we can't build for a flash flood like that. It just can't happen."

During the meeting, they had the State Board of Contractors just in case community members still needed help repairing their homes from the flood.

They also had information outlining where the flooding happened and why the flooding in that area turned out the way it did. To learn more, you can click on this link or this additional link.
