As snow continues to pile up, city leaders are reminding people that a few simple steps can make a big difference when plows are out on the roads.
According to the City of South Lake Tahoe in an online post, drivers should give snowplow operators the right of way, stay informed about snow operations and parking restrictions, and expect delays during major storms.
City officials said that with excessive amounts of snow falling in a short period, plows are traveling at 4 to 5 mph instead of their usual 8 mph. Snow removal operations begin once more than three inches of snow has accumulated.
People are also asked to clear snow from around fire hydrants to help first responders during emergencies.
The city is also warning drivers not to park cars in the street during snowplow operations. Cars left in the roadway can delay plowing and may be towed or cited.
Officials said people should not place mailboxes, trash containers, cars, or other obstacles in the right of way, and drivers should not follow plows too closely because they may stop or change direction unexpectedly.
The city encourages people to follow its social media pages for daily snowplow updates and to use the online snowplow tracking tool available on the city website. More information about snow removal operations can also be found on the city’s website.
