The Nevada Seismological Laboratory reported a magnitude 4.95 earthquake southwest of Fallon, striking just before 1:30 a.m. Friday and also southeast of Fernley.

The lab said aftershocks may continue throughout the day. It also advised that during an earthquake, the safest action is to get under a heavy table or desk to protect against falling objects.

Local agencies reported no immediate major injuries or significant structural damage, but assessments are ongoing across the region.

City of Fernley response

City of Fernley officials said in a community online update that a magnitude 5.2 earthquake was recorded near Silver Springs, just east of Fernley, with many residents possibly feeling light to moderate shaking followed by aftershocks.

The city said there are no reports of significant injuries or major structural damage within city limits at this time. First responders and public works crews are assessing infrastructure and monitoring conditions.

Officials reminded residents that aftershocks may continue over the next several hours or days. They advised checking homes for damage or gas leaks, avoiding elevators if structural issues are suspected, securing shifted items, and staying informed through official channels.

Lyon County update

Lyon County said in a Facebook post that a magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported about 12 miles from Silver Springs, with shaking potentially felt across surrounding areas.

Officials said there are no immediate reports of major damage or injuries, but assessments are continuing. Residents were advised to check for injuries, inspect homes for gas leaks or structural damage, be prepared for aftershocks, avoid damaged areas, and follow guidance from local authorities.
