The Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services (DWSS) has announced some new verification changes for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

According to a release, SNAP recipients must provide proof of shelter and utility expenses, effective immediately.

Officials ask that recipients bring current utility bills, and a lease agreement, mortgage statement or rental receipts when applying for benefits at their local DWSS office.

Documents for phone applications can be emailed directly or uploaded in the Access Nevada web portal.

DWSS says that housing expenses directly impact the amount of assistance a household is eligible to receive, and verifying the costs helps to maintain the integrity of the program - and may even increase benefit amounts in the future.

Anyone in northern Nevada experiencing food insecurity is encouraged to apply for food stamps online, in person at a DWSS office or by calling (775) 684-4000.
