Protests are expected to happen all across the country in response to President Trump and his administration's policies this weekend. Many local law enforcement agencies are preparing for those protests here in northern Nevada.
Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance says while they're committed to protecting everyone's First Amendment right of free speech and public assembly, but they ask that everyone practices it safely and lawfully.
"We've seen peaceful protests nationwide this week, and unfortunately some of those peaceful protests have become unsafe for participants and our communities alike," says Nance.
Nance says hopefully that will not be the case here. She tells us their number one priority is making sure everyone stays safe, especially with so many people attending events this weekend like graduations, Eldorado's BBQ, Blues, and Brews, roller skating at the Believe Plaza, and Father's Day celebrations.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says, "A lot of folks are going to be out and about enjoying this weekend. The weather is perfect. Many will attend the demonstration. So, our view is very wide."
Several agencies across the region including Reno Police, Washoe County Sheriff's Office, and Nevada State Police will be increasing their staff, the use of specialized teams, intelligence gathering and the utilization of the Reno-Sparks Real Time Information Center (RTIC).
Nance says if at any point protests start to become dangerous, leave the area and get to safety: "We don't want people that are there to peacefully protest and have their voices heard to get wrapped up in the law enforcement that is inevitably going to happen if violence or illegal acts ensue."
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam released a statement saying in-part, "...any actions that threaten peace and order will be met with firm and lawful consequences. I encourage every resident to choose unity over division, dialogue over destruction, and peace over provocation."
Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Division says they're confident our community can peacefully protest successfully this weekend.
Deputy Chief Anthony Muñoz says, "One thing that we have here that not everyone else has is that cohesiveness between the community and law enforcement."
