Washoe County has a brand-new air quality monitoring station in Verdi.

Northern Nevada Public Health tells us this will help fill the gap in their monitoring network for the western part of our region.

"Especially during wildfires that happened in California, typically where we see that first is on the western side of our region, so having this resource right here in Verdi is really going to help us provide that information to the community so they can protect themselves," said Francisco Vega, Director of Air Quality Measurement, NNPH.

This technology will be used to collect particulates like dust and ground-level ozone.

Once that is collected, they compare it to standard results to see how public health can be protected through air quality.

They say it will be fully functioning in the next week or so.
