As winter storms approach, counties and cities across Northern Nevada and parts of California are offering free sandbags as a proactive measure in preparation for possible flooding.

Forecasts call for a mix of rain and snow, with periods of heavier rain that could lead to runoff in low-lying areas or places with poor drainage.

Officials say sandbags are being offered to help people prepare for possible flooding and to take proactive steps to help protect homes, businesses, and property ahead of upcoming storms. People must bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill and transport the sandbags themselves.
