The Washoe's County Sheriff's Consolidated Bomb Squad would like to remind the public about legal ways to dispose hazardous explosive materials.

These are items like illegal fireworks, unwanted ammunition, blasting caps or other explosive devices. These items can be found mostly around old mining sites.

Residents are urged to:

  • Do not dispose of these items in household trash or recycling.
  • Do not handle or transport suspicious or unknown explosive items yourself.
  • Call Non-Emergency Dispatch to report the item. Trained technicians will respond to assess, safely remove, and dispose of it.

The Washoe's County Sheriff's Office says residents who find items during property clean-outs, construction or while exploring rural areas should move to a safe distance before calling law enforcement.

They also say the improper disposal or storage causing leaks or spills of hazardous explosive materials poses a significant threat to human health and safety.

If you run into an emergency, please dial 911.
