A new local business is celebrating its grand opening this weekend. The Ace Hardware Store at Mira Loma and McCarran is family owned and operated. For a local couple, it's been a dream for some time.

"It took about a year between the idea coming about and actually opening the doors," said Jay Irvine, who owns the store with his wife Nicole. "It was a good process. This is a big change for us, but I really think it's going to work out."

The space is remodeled and reimagined.

"It was a Dollar Tree before this," Irvine said. "We were able to take over this space and the boutique next to it and were able to expand into both spaces for this Ace Hardware store. We've done a complete renovation and it's a beautiful space."

Just a couple of months into the soft opening phase, they have nearly a dozen employees - and this business is a family affair.

"Our 16-year-old works here, my wife's sister works here," Irvine said. "We're very family-oriented and we bring the families in, bring the kids in, we even have the kid-sized shopping cars here so they can do their own shopping."

Here, giving back is part of the business model. They donate to local nonprofits like Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and the Nevada Kids Foundation.

"My wife and I are adoptive parents, we were foster parents, and so we definitely want to give back to the kids," Irvine said. "We have a really good family relationship here."

And this grand opening is about getting the word about a business that's been a game changer for this family.

"Right now it's hey, we didn't even realize you guys were here because we're under the soft opening," Irvine said. "But we're having our grand opening really soon and everyone is really excited."

That grand opening celebration is a three-day event - this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be raffles, giveaways, food, and games and crafts for the kids.
