Beginning Tuesday, May 21, commercial vehicles with air brakes will be prohibited on Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431).
This is due to maintenance being done on the Incline Village truck escape ramp.
The truck escape ramp is a way for trucks, or any vehicle experiencing brake issues, to safely exit the road. The ramp uses pre-tensioned drag nets to slow and eventually stop the vehicle.
NDOT also has some tips regarding truck escape ramps:
- To avoid needing to use a truck escape ramp, you should service your vehicle regularly. You can also use brake check areas near mountain summits to make sure your brakes are working properly.
- If you must use a truck escape ramp, enter in line with the ramp and as close to the center as possible. You should contact the Nevada Department of Transportation and a tow truck company after using the ramp, as well as have any faulty brakes repaired before driving again.
- Do not avoid using an escape ramp for fear of damage to your vehicle.
- Do not attempt to drive out of the ramp yourself, as it can cause further damage.
- Do not wait in your vehicle while it is in the truck ramp.
- Do not used the ramp as a rest stop or parking area.
