Jessie Buckley has claimed her first Oscar for her moving, emotional performance in the period drama “Hamnet.” The prize for best actress went to two-time nominee Buckley for her role as William Shakespeare’s wife, Agnes, in the film directed by Chloé Zhao. Buckley, who is Irish, had swept the awards circuit leading up to Sunday’s ceremony, winning in her category at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Actor Awards. “Hamnet,” an adaptation of a 2020 novel of the same name, received eight Oscar nominations and Buckley was the widely projected winner for best actress.
