When someone is in need, they rely on first responders to show up. But who shows up for them? That's where Nevada Peer Support Network comes in.
It's a group of retired first responders that show up however they're needed, to support folks who are still actively working. That could be working with someone who's struggling mentally or showing up to a scene and supporting those on duty.
"When we are requested by a local agency, be it a structure fire or a long term, law enforcement incident... we respond with a crew," said Charlie Tabano, Operations Manager, Nevada Peer Support Network. "Our team is our all-volunteer, retired first responders, and we provide climate control shelter, food, beverages..."
Tabano says they also bring things like portable bathrooms and wash stations, helping to provide comforts and resources that he says all first responders should have. He says when the crews are working and feeling a bit down because of the call, this helps lift their spirits so they can push through.
Many of the members of the non-profit say they wanted to help after they retired because of the good an organization like this would have done for them or did do for them.
Eric Millette/Member, Nevada Peer Support Network: "The idea is that we show up, do the best we can to come alongside of the first responders, and with that, just to save one more life. And we don't know which life that's going to be," said Eric Millette, a member of the Nevada Peer Support Network.
The network is funded through donations and grants, and a lot of the equipment they have has also been donated by first responder agencies.
