Over the last weekend, the Nevada GOP hosted a private bi-annual state convention at Lake Tahoe. The convention was not open to the press. However, we contacted Republican members to get an update on how everything went.
2 News Nevada is the first to report that the party has modified its official platform and added two new resolutions related to controversial topics in K-12 education.
The first resolution opposes implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI, in school policy or curriculum. DEI is a philosophy and culture that acknowledges, supports, and accepts individuals from all backgrounds, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.
The second resolution says that the Nevada GOP supports the prohibition of biological boys and men from bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports designated for girls.Â
Washoe County Republican Party Chairman Bruce Parks also chaired the platform committee at the convention.Â
"It is absolutely a safety concern. I'm sorry, but biological men do not belong in the women's locker room," said WashoE Parks.Â
The Nevada GOP contends that Title 9 has been misconstrued - and that it was intended to prohibit discrimination for girls and women only - and not trans people.Â
However, the ACLU of Nevada says that stance is openly discriminatory.
"People who are opposed to equal rights consistently use anecdotes to push points forward; they create boogeymen and monsters out of every group they can find," said ACLU of Nevada Executive Director Athar Haseebullah, Esq.Â
The Nevada GOP also holds that biological boys or men should not be permitted to compete in sports intended for biological girls or women.Â
"If you're the parents of a girl that's competing at the high school level and has the potential of getting awarded a scholarship to college, and a biological male comes along and strips them of that opportunity, is that fair," asked Parks.Â
The other resolution in the Nevada GOP's platform opposes diversity, equity, and inclusion, DEI, in K-12 policy and curriculum.Â
"Our schools should be teaching science, math, reading: the social issues should not be a part of the curriculum that is taught at the schools," said Parks.Â
The ACLU of Nevada believes that the Nevada GOP's platform amendments are unwise politically because Nevadans voted twice to incorporate equal rights into the state constitution.Â
"It sounds as if there is going to either skirt and pull back on the existing interpretations to the protections afforded by Title 9 or attempt to overturn the equal rights amendment which simply isn't going to happen in Nevada; I think it's cheap political theater," said Athar Haseebullah, Esq.Â
The Nevada Democratic provided us with the following response:
"No matter what the Nevada GOP puts on their website, the reality is their candidates are running on an out-of-touch agenda that includes banning abortion nationwide, passing tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy while leaving the middle class behind, and tearing down our democracy," Nevada State Democratic Party spokesperson Tai Sims.Â
