High school students from six Nevada counties competed in the "Poetry Out Loud" competition state finals on Saturday.

Students could perform three poems of their choice at the event, presented by the Nevada Arts Council.

This year's winner, Rayann Hijazi said she's been preparing for months for this competition. She had advice for others considering getting into performing poetry.

"Choose poems that really speak to you so that they're easy to remember and say to other people because they're kind of like a piece of you," she said. "Just do your absolute best and go out there, and even if you're nervous it's a great thing to do."

Hijazi will be competing in Washington D.C. in the national finals at the end of April, representing Nevada.
