The nice weather is calling to many outdoors, some with their dogs, but the Washoe County Animal Services says not having your dog on a leash can be dangerous.
"That is the thing is people say -- my dog is friendly and they have an off leash, however, if the other dog that is on a leash is not friendly, you're off leash dog runs up to the other dog [and a] fight will start. It's something that happens every day," says Cindy Doak, Field Supervisor at Washoe County Animal Services.Â
After five years of enjoying the same spot, Michael Levine was walking 'Little Wayne' leash free in Mayberry Park when a couple dogs attacked him. It was an incident they didn't expect would happen.
"I had multiple dog bites, our dog lost most of one of his ears and was bleeding, and we just grabbed him and ran to the hospital for him, and I went to the hospital for me," says Levine.
To make sure what happened to Levine's family doesn't happen again, the rules are and have been reinforced. Failing to follow the law could result in a $100 fine if it's a first offense, $200 for a second offense and $400 third offense.
"It's far more common than people realize. I'd say if you are in a designated safe area that isn't off leash, keep your pet on a leash at all times," says Rebecca Goff with the Nevada Humane Society.
