The Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Board unanimously voted to approve the development of an affordable housing strategy to be included in the 2017 regional plan update.
This comes after months of efforts from several local organizations who banded together to create what they called "A Road Map to Affordable Housing."
Local nonprofits, private businesses and other groups formed the partnership. Together, they raised $90,000 to bring in a national nonprofit housing organization, Enterprise Community Partners.
Enterprise has helped to create nearly 470,000 affordable homes across the country.
Community members leading these efforts say it's crucial to provide a more diverse type of affordable housing for the growing Reno population. Along with rising rent rates, the low availability of housing options makes things more difficult for low to moderate income families.
In fact, average rent prices in the Reno area are now some of the highest in the region's history. The cost of rent has jumped 1.2% in the last month, and 7.7% in the last year.
With this approval, Enterprise and the local community will work in partnership with TMRP to find the best solution for the Reno area. This will likely include a strategy for sustainable housing for the next five to ten years.
