Reno Rock Camp is devoted to teaching kids how to play musical instruments, sing and perform – and they offer their classes year round. Listen in to any rehearsal and you’ll see the kids get the full rock and roll experience. The group’s premiere band gives a public concert almost weekly. “Once you do, like, your first performance you don't really get that nervous anymore,” says 11-year-old Manning Gray who’s been with the camp for three years.
Getting the kids on stage almost immediately is the secret to success says Michael Hill - the creator and executive director of Reno Rock Camp. "You watch them develop within two performances and they're ready. They're (like) Michael, let's go, let's do this."
11-year-old Natalia Chacon agrees. "It helps with stage fright and stuff, like at school when I have to read a paper or something, it helps with that.”
Watching the kids set up and practice, the excitement and love for what they’re learning is palpable.
Reno Rock Camp began more than three years ago as an after school program and summer camp. It now serves young people ages 8 to 20, all year round. And no musical experience is required.
"Absolutely none,” says Hill, “and we bring them in and we foster them and we see if they're an alto or baritone and we put them in the right groups that they need to be in."
Natalia started with Reno Rock Camp about 3 years ago, took a break, and is now glad to be back. "And now I do vocals, keyboard and drums."
There’s no need to buy or rent an instrument – they are provided.
With support from the City of Reno and the Reno-Sparks Indian colony, Rock Camp continues growing. They recently expanded to Carson City and next year will begin offering classes in Las Vegas.
The dozens of kids who participate now say they're hooked. "Playing the drums at rock camp inspired me to start band at school and I do percussion." says Natalia.
I asked Manning what the kids at school say when they hear about the concert he performs in.
Smiling, he admits, "They usually don't believe me."
The cost for Reno Rock Camp is $225 per month, but scholarships are available. For more details, go to http://renorockcamp.com/
