A year after he was killed while trying to protect other children during a schoolyard shooting, former Sparks Middle School teacher Michael Landsberry has posthumously been awarded a rare Air Force medal for bravery beyond the line of duty.
Â
More than 500 people gathered Sunday at a ceremony at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center where Nevada Air National Guard Col. David Clark presented the Air Force Airman's Medal to Landsberry's widow, Sharon.
Â
Clark also presented her the United States' Valley Forge Cross for Heroism.
Â
Landsberry was shot and killed by a 7th grader who wounded two fellow students before killing himself.
Â
Clark says the Airman's Medal is the highest award given to an airman for heroism in non-combat. Only 250 have been issued since it was created in 1960. (AP)
