The Department of Homeland Security rolled out an enhanced system to alert Americans about terror threats. The updated system aims to let Americans know about possible threats even before they become "credible."
There's a new category in the existing alert system called "a bulletin"- issued when there are current developments or general trends regarding terror threats.
It supplements the elevated and imminent alerts which were already part of the system.
"They're already getting information from the federal government but it's a way of homogenizing how that information is getting out. So it's a signal to the public and also to the responders and security personnel who have to deal with the threat,” says Juan Zarate, CBS News Senior National Security Analyst.
Shortly after unveiling the update, the Department of Homeland Security issued its first bulletin, warning that terrorist-inspired individuals and homegrown violent extremists may be inspired to target public events or places.
