The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says they are investigating a human skull that was found by a hiker near Truckee and Highway 89 on Sunday.
Deputies say a second search of the area revealed additional bone fragments that may also be human. They say personnel also found an apparent old campsite near the remains.
Detectives and coroner investigators are still working to establish a connection between the bone fragments and campsite.
The Placer County Coroner’s office is conducting additional follow-up in an attempt to identify the remains.
Deputies say the cause of the death remains under investigation.
