The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is urging the public to remain alert to ensure the safety of bicyclists as warmer weather leads to increased cycling for commuting, exercise, and recreation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,105 bicyclists were killed and an estimated 46,195 were injured in 2022.
Throughout the month, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department says it will carry out traffic safety operations aimed at curbing driver behaviors that endanger bicyclists and pedestrians.
These include speeding, making illegal turns, failure to yield the right of way, and running stop signs or red lights.
SLTPD offered the following safety tips for both drivers and bicyclists:
Drivers:
- Slow down and follow the speed limit.
- Be cautious when driving through intersections.
- Look for bicyclists and pedestrians before turning or opening car doors near streets or bike paths.
- Be patient and give space when passing bicyclists. California law requires drivers to change lanes when possible and to maintain at least three feet of space when passing.
- Avoid driving while distracted or impaired.
Bicyclists:
- Use lights when riding at night.
- While helmets are not required for riders 18 and older, wearing a properly secured helmet is recommended, as it significantly reduces the risk of head injury in a crash.
- Ride in the same direction as traffic and follow the same rules as other slow-moving cars.
- Yield to pedestrians, who have the right-of-way at marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
The program was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
