The Secretary of State's office is sending signature verification cards to all active voter in Nevada before the election. The form allows voters to confirm that their signature is up to date. While filling out is optional, doing so will help ensure a smoother election process. Active voters should have received or will soon receive a "signature verification card" in the mail. The card will ask for personal information, such as the last four digits of your social security number and birthday, but it will not be enclosed in an envelope.

"There are a couple of choices for identifying information you can provide to our office. Whether that's the last four digits of your driver's license, the last four digits of your social security number, or your date of birth. We would already have that information on your record. But, having that information is very important to ensure we can cure your ballot if there is some discrepancy," explained Registrar of Voters for Washoe County Media Production Specialist George Guthrie.

Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar addresses concerns about the card's legitimacy and security of personal information.

"This is an official piece of mail. This is an opportunity for us to increase the security of the election system," said Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar.

The ultimate goal is to expedite and secure the election process. The matter goes to a bipartisan review if the signatures do not match.

"A Republican and a Democrat will review the signature and determine whether or not that's the appropriate voter. If they determine that it is, then it goes into processing. If they find that the signatures do not match, it goes into a curing process, which means the clerk needs to contact the voter directly to verify that it is the voter's ballot," explained Secretary Aguilar.

The goal is to use fewer election resources to cure signatures, increase the capacity for election offices to process ballots, and, ideally, report accurate election results on the night of the election.

At the Washoe County Registrar of Voters office, a solid flow of voters was coming in to submit their signature verification cards in person.

"I've been out here for an hour or two, and about three out of four people walking past us is one of these cards from the secretary's office; people are just streaming in. People are enthusiastic about getting that update, so they're walking it down to our office," said Washoe County Registrar's Office Media Production Specialist George Guthrie.

Guthrie tells us that, as of Tuesday early afternoon, more than 11,000 voters had come to the office to submit their forms.

We talked with several voters who came in to drop off their signature verification cards.

"I'm bringing in the signature cards to vote, so I'll get my ballot in the mail, and from there, my wife and I will both go in and vote," said Washoe County voter Richard Danse.

"I just want to make sure my signature is correct, and it is, so there's no problem with that. But, I have to come back in tomorrow and drop off my mother's signature because her signature has changed because she's elderly, so it's difficult for her to write now," said Washoe County voter George Vaio.

"It's not like I don't trust the post office, but I'm closer, so it seemed like a safer way to go," said Washoe County voter and small business owner John Noellert.

Again, updating your signature is not mandatory.
