The 2020 USBC Open Championships has been canceled due to COVID-19 safety concerns. Originally, the championship was set to be at the National Bowling Stadium in March but got postponed to September of 2020. The United States Bowling Congress made the announcement of the cancellation on July 15.
USBC says all teams will have the opportunity to roll their entries to the 2021 Open Championships or receive a refund.Â
The next time the USBC Open Championships is set to be in Reno is 2023. Las Vegas will host it next year and in 2022.
However, Reno is set to host the USBC Women's Championships in 2022 and 2025.Â
Ben McDonald with the Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitor's Authority (RSCVA) tells us the USBC Open Championships generated about $70 million in revenue when it was last here in 2016.
When it got postponed in March, RSCVA was already expecting a loss in revenue and a smaller crowd. McDonald says the cancellation is still a big loss, but their expectations were already lowered when the event first got postponed.Â
The United States Bowling Congress has also canceled all remaining national events for 2020.
