Sportsbooks had a unique opportunity Thursday night as four major sports leagues held games, including the first NFL game of the season.
"All I got to say is are you ready for some football," said sports bettor Shelly Johnson. She is excited to be at the Peppermill Sportsbook for the first NFL game of the season.
"I got chills. I got goosebumps. I've been waiting for this," said Johnson. She's not the only one excited about professional football coming back. There were no preseason games this year because of the pandemic, so the sportsbook is filled with people eager to watch and bet. Up until now, the pandemic has kept most people home to protect themselves against COVID-19 transmission.
"It's been a really good reopen for us, especially because people who normally bet $20 parlays, they were cooped up for a few months. So when they came back they were betting $100 parlays. They were just firing away when they came back," said Peppermill Sportsbook Director of Race and Sports, John Haines.
"The feeling you get of the excitement, other than just sitting on your couch. You can feel the excitement and everyone's rooting for somebody. Whether it be your team or the other team, it's just exciting," said Johnson.
"love watching. I love being in the action. Being in the sportsbook is awesome. Being around everybody. Hopefully I make some money, that's why we're all here," said sports bettor Brandon Salley.
The night had something special for all sports fans. The Vegas Golden Knights and regional favorite LA Lakers played, on top of Major League Baseball and other sports.
"I come from California, so football or basketball, I love it," said sports bettor Ken Buchanan.
"I'm here because of college football and hopefully a great season," said Salley.
As for Johnson, she's not shy about letting people know who she bet on: "Kansas City to win!"
The Peppermill Sportsbook also holds a season long betting challenge and the pros contest can be played on the sportbook's app.
