Organizers say a basketball game between Reno High School staff and McQueen High School staff raised more than $5,000 for a cause that has a personal connection to both schools.Reno High School and McQueen High School students were excited to see their teachers take a shot at the Hoops for Hope benefit basketball game at Reno High School’s gymnasium. “To see a history teacher dunk on someone else's teacher, there's so much incentive there,” said high school student Jeremy Guevin.
“I’m going to shoot twenty 3-pointers and I’m going to hope that one of them goes in,” said Reno High School English teacher Brent Busboom. It's been 30 years since he hit the court, but this game was an opportunity he couldn't pass on.Funds from this year’s event go toward the medical bills for Kelly Cass, who was hit by a car back in December. “I was on my skateboard when the driver hit. He broke both legs, my arm, and my neck. Luckily these past 3 months I have gotten better,” said accident victim Kelly Cass. She is a McQueen High School graduate. Her father worked for both schools.“Well I was a teacher and a coach at McQueen High School for 23 years. When I left, I was dean of students at Reno High School for 1 year,” said Ken Cass.
The gym was packed with students and families who were all eager to contribute to the cause. “This situation is so tough. To see all the love and support feels so great to me. I'm just so grateful,” said Kelly Cass.
According to organizers, the final score was McQueen 51, Reno 40. All the giving however made everyone a winner. If you missed the game, you can still donate to the Cass family by dropping off funds at McQueen High School.
