A magnitude 5.8 earthquake has struck a remote area of central California.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday and was centered in the Owens Valley region below the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada.

The quake was felt widely, including about 240 miles away in Sacramento.

Veteran seismologist Lucy Jones says the quake occurred in the same location as a magnitude-4.6 quake that hit on Monday night.

Jones says the earlier tremor is now considered a foreshock.

There's no immediate word on any injuries or damage. Some viewers in Spanish Springs say they felt the quakes. The quakes were also felt in the Las Vegas Valley. 

Owens Lake is located five miles south of Lone Pine.
