Nevada Press Release:
Three of Nevada’s upperclassmen have been named to the Preseason All-Mountain West baseball team, as senior outfielder Jaylon McLaughlin, senior first basemen Dillan Shrum and junior third basemen Joshua Zamora were selected today. The Wolf Pack’s three honorees tied with UNLV for the most from a single school.
Nevada is slated to finish third in the conference, with San Diego State garnering four first-place votes to be picked as the favorite and Fresno State finishing just above Nevada in second and tying the Pack with two first-place votes.
McLaughlin enjoyed a breakout campaign for Nevada last season, leading the team with a .339 batting average while being named first-team All-MW. In his first year in the outfield, tallied a career-high 48 games played, 61 hits, eight doubles, three home runs and 24 RBI. His .360 batting average in conference play ranked fifth in the MW and his 17 stolen bases against MW foes was tops in the league. McLaughlin finished with 25 stolen bases on the year, which ranks seventh in Nevada history for a single season and was responsible for walk-off hits against Saint Mary’s and Air Force.
Shrum will return for his senior season as one of the most consistent players for the Pack over the past three seasons as Nevada’s primary first baseman. He blasted 10 home runs last season to tie the season high for the Pack in 2019 and his eight in conference tied the league lead despite a shortened season due to injury. As a junior, batted .280 with seven doubles, a triple and 29 RBI with seven multi-RBI games and 12 multi-hit games. In his three seasons at Nevada, he has only committed three errors to boast a .997 career fielding percentage.
Zamora adds to his decorated career, adding his second Preseason All-MW honor. He was named second-team All-MW last season after batting .320 with eight homers and a team-high 38 RBI. He appeared in a team-best 54 games with 70 hits and smacked 14 doubles, tied for the most on the Pack. Zamora got hot to end the 2019 season, finishing on an eight-game hitting streak and was named to the All-MW Tournament team after slashing a team-best .385 with five hits and a double in three games.
Nevada’s season will begin this Friday, Feb. 14 at Portland in a four-game series. John Ramey will have the call on 94.1 FM/1450 AM and can also be streamed by clicking here. Tickets for all 23 home games are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking here.
