28th Annual Rib Cook-Off in Full Swing With a Family Friendly Rivalry

Wednesday marks the beginning of the Rib Cook-Off in Sparks. The festival goes until 9pm on Wednesday, and Monday is the last day for the cook-off. The cook-off is not only fun for attendees but also for the cooks. Nikki doesn't need any tips when it comes to making her ribs. Her dad is one of the originals here.

"It's definitely a friendly rivalry like I hope he gets second place this year," said Nikki Haggerty.

This is her dad, Tom's 28th year at the cook off.  He's known for  his Chicago style ribs. His daughter's ribs are a little bit different.

"She's come up with a great taste," said Tom Ferguson.

Her ribs combines the flavorings of both Texas BBQ and Chicago.

"But she did not win so that's good for last year. This year I want her to win more so than I do," said Ferguson.

The last time Tom won first place was back in 2012.

"This one, they're perfectly juicy and nice and tender. I love it," said cook-off attendee Margie Chambers.

The ribs take around four hours to cook.

"We cook it slow and easy and we use a seasoning that we perfected over the years," said Ferguson.

Haggerty says her meat has a little bit more of a kick to it but not too spicy.

After watching her dad for many, many years, this is her second go at it by herself.  Last year she came in sixth place for the People's Choice Award. This year she would like to get first. While it's a tough trophy to win, with a supportive family, the sky is the limit.
