Saturday marks the 36th annual Jack T. Reviglio Cioppino Feed and Auction.
The signature event for the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows raises nearly 15% of the club’s annual operating budget.
Mike Wurm, Director of the BGCTM, says the event will have a sold out crowd 1,600 people.
“People from all walks of life and folks from generations who’ve supported this community, not just the boys and girls club, but the community in general, so there really is a local flavor, I mean there's not a more Reno event that goes on in Reno than the cioppino feed," says Wurm.
Nearly 600 items will be raffled and auctioned off at the fundraiser, many of which were donated directly from people in the Reno community.
The man making the cioppino from scratch on Saturday, Bud Sorenson, is the same cook that's been doing it since the fundraiser began 36 years ago, and can still recall how the whole thing came to be.
“I worked for Jack Reviglio, Jack says, ‘I hear you make a pretty good cioppino,’ and I said yeah, he says, ‘well we need a fundraiser and we know what to do,’ I said when do you want to do it, he said, ‘tomorrow get back here,’ that's how it started. We had 60 people at the first event, the next year 120 and it's growing and growing and growing," says Sorenson.
Organizers say they hope to raise close to $1 million on Saturday.
