Downtown Festivals in Reno This Weekend

We have two major festivals happening this weekend in Downtown Reno and there are some road closures you will want to know about.

Because of the Reno River Festival... Arlington Avenue will be closed from First Street to Court. Also, Virginia Street will be closed from Second Street to Fourth Street for the Reno Sculpture Festival.

All weekend long you can take in all of the large scale art at the Sculpture Festival or you can check out the Reno River Festival. They are both free.

Neil Horning, co-operator of the Reno River Festival said, "They can get in the water if they want to. A lot of family activities, live music for both days Saturday and Sunday. We have a rock climbing wall, bungee trampoline, a zip-line that shoots across the Truckee River."

The Reno River Festival kicks off tomorrow, but this year is different than the others.

"We do not have the professional kayaking competitions. But that doesn't really change the overall theme of the event. It's still that you can come down, enjoy the weather, it's going to be beautiful,” said Horning.

Water levels are too low for kayaks in the Truckee River.

“Well since I can't paddle, maybe I'll go for a swim," said Stephen Rideout, from Salt Lake City, Utah.

This year, festival organizers are adding some alternatives, like volleyball and Frisbee to make up for the lack of the whitewater events. And if you don't want to get your feet wet, there are other options for you as well.

"We have about 100 art and craft exhibitors. Something for everyone really. Jewelry, clothing, artwork, woodworking, things like that. Lots of food," said Jason Williams, Event Producer.

Tanna Pearman from Reno said, "I'm sad that we're not going to see the kayaks, but I'm excited about the art, I'm really excited to see that, the vendors out more and I think it's going to be a fun weekend."

And believe it or not, there's more to do this weekend.

Jeff Schomberg is a sculpture artist who said, "Come on down, and enjoy some big art."

You can see larger than life sculptures in downtown Reno the next three days, located between the Whitney Peak and Eldorado on the Retrac Plaza.

“There's steel, wood, ceramic, stone,” said Schomberg.

The event features a dozen pieces by local artists and there will be music, food, and beer too.

"Just about everybody that walks by is very interested in what we're doing and they're taking a lot of photos and they all want to come back and enjoy the event,” said Schomberg.
