The Reno Fire Department says it's time to start taking down the Christmas decorations, specifically the tree. Fire crews say keeping a natural tree up can be a danger to your home. Most trees are inside a house or in a confined space, it dries up faster and can catch fire quickly.
Reno Fire Department's Fire Marshall, Tray Palmer said, "We're after the Christmas season right now where we have a lot of Christmas trees inside the house in a warm environment. And what happens is even if you've watered your tree throughout the holiday season there's a point where the tree can no longer suck up water. And so these trees are drying up pretty fast at this point."
Though Christmas tree fires aren't common in the Reno-Sparks area, fire crews say it's still important to take precautions. Officials recommend disposing the tree properly.Â
"Don't put them out in the wilderness, or dump them on the side of the road because then we'll have a combustible problem in the wild land fire season." said Palmer.
Several organizations like Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful have programs where you can recycle your Christmas tree. For information on that you can click here.
