NDOW: Precautions for Bear Activity in Nevada

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) says they are getting reports of bears out and about from Dayton to western Reno.

They said bears do come out of their dens occasionally in the winter when there's warmer days. If they find a good source of food, they will remain out.

NDOW is recommending residents bring in their bird feeders, at least during the hours from dusk until dawn if they're in an area with bear activity. They said to take the feeders down for a few weeks to help any bears move on and they want to remind residents there is a garbage ordinance in place for Washoe, Carson and Douglas Counties.

If you had had your garbage accessed by a bear, residents need to secure it or else you are in violation of the county health code and you could be fined.

Waste Management will bring residents bear-resistant containers upon request, but it does come with a service fee increase due to the cost of the bins.
