In their job they usually hear about speeders, parking, noise, vandalism and the homeless. What was the Police Chief Jason Soto’s favorite meeting at a “Cup With A Cop?” The young mom who just came over to say hi. "She just came out to meet the police department! With the baby, yep. Her, her husband and their child, and it was...it was special."

Today’s (Wednesday) was the first of 4 Cups With A Cop this year. They're casual, friendly gatherings. The goal of course is to help neighbors get to know their officers, and for officers to build relationships with these residents. And at the same time, supporting local business. As Code Coffee shop owner Destiny Sanford told me, "I'm married to a police officer, and I'm the daughter of a police officer."

Which made Destiny's First Responder-themed business on Wells Avenue a natural choice for today's meet up, though the next Cup With A Cop in April will be at a Starbucks. As Reno officer Travis Warren told us, "You know when you go out and meet friends over a cup of coffee? You just talk about life! Talk about things in general, and this is really what this is about."

Officers hear complaints about...bad drivers. Reno-Sparks Police officer Angelo Hafalla told me that is usually “Careless driving, aggressive driving...reckless driving." And there were questions today about joining up. Chief Soto told me, "We hear a lot of people asking about job opportunities, which is fantastic." But Kelly Anderson came asking about resources, for a family problem: "My son, who was very successful and a graduate here in Reno ended up going down that dark hole of drug addiction."

At the last Cup With A Cop, she got some advice. Kelly got her help and found where to go. Her son now sober, she let Officer Hafalla know what worked. As he told me, "She gave me insights on some resources that are very valuable to the community, which is a big help." Kelly said, "It's like a feedback loop. It’s like saying, 'I got answers, I got better answers and this is where my son is.'”

Each learned something from the other...just one contact today out of dozens. Oh, and who paid for the coffee? The police did. The doughnuts too...of course.

The next "Cup With A Cop" will be at Starbucks on Caughlin Parkway April 17th from 8-10am. We'll be sure to remind you at 2 News as we get closer.
