Fog is possible Saturday morning as inversions remain in northern Nevada.
Our Sierra communities around Lake Tahoe have the best chance of seeing fog develop Saturday morning. Freezing fog is possible in the Truckee Meadows as well, but it will be more localized or patchy.
If the temperature is below freezing, then it is called freezing fog. Freezing fog can cause a drizzle to collect on roadways, leading to black ice. Fog that does form will clear as the day goes on.
An inversion is a layer of warm air above cooler air. Reno and surrounding neighborhoods in the valley are cooler than the high Sierra when an inversion sets up, especially if the inversion is strong.
This makes it easier for fog to form as well, trapping moisture and cooler air in the valley.Â
The low at 8000’ in the Sierra on Saturday is 39 degrees, while the forecasted low in Reno is 30 degrees.
You can find an inversion on a sounding. Soundings are profiles of the air going up in altitude.
When there is an inversion there is a bend in the temperature profile pointing towards warmer temperatures, before switching back to cooler temperatures aloft.
Inversions can also cause hazy skies and lower the air quality. Not a ton of haze is expected this weekend, but there could be a light amount.
