Nevada had four new laws added to the books as of January 1st and three of them will impact us here in Northern Nevada.
For starters a bill aimed at encouraging kids to stay in school will now threaten to suspend their license or permit if they don't. High School students will need to attend 90% of their classes to be in good standing and that will need to be certified by a school official. More than 10 unexcused absences in a traditional track school; more than 7 in a block schedule school will put those driving privileges in jeopardy.
"I think it's not a bad idea," said Addie Sturgeon who has a 15-year old. "I mean if it keeps them in check and if it helps them keep themselves in check because the privilege of driving is important to them I think it's worth it."
"I don't think what we do in school has anything to do with driving." said 18-year old Eric Hickok.
"I just don't agree with it," added 17- year old Zade Salaho. "What we do in school shouldn't impact what we do out of school. I mean I understand the reasoning but I think there are a lot of lose ends."
As of today Nevada has another layer of courts. The recently approved appeals court is expected to take the strain off of the State Supreme court. The three judges have been appointed and they actually begin work on Monday.
And if you have a utility trailer or an ATV you can now register it for three years at a time. Large tractor trailer rigs can be permanently registered if they are from here in Nevada.
The fourth law that went into effect today had to do with the way water board members are elected in southern Nevada.
