Grocery store prices have been increasing, and this has been making it harder for local food pantries to help those in need this holiday season.

Catholic Charities has been a go to spot for decades, for those who have been looking for support during the holidays, one of their biggest events they do each year is their Feeding Families holiday food baskets.

Marie Baxter, the CEO, of Catholic Charities says "We give out those full thanksgiving meals for folks, there's a turkey, a ham and all the fixings to about 5,000 families."

She adds, they're seeing the exact same problems as other consumers when it comes to buying produce.

Baxter tells us "We're seeing shortages of different items, as well as things just cost a lot more right now."

She says they took some precautions in the summer by ordering food early because they anticipated there might be a food shortage especially for popular holiday items.

Baxter explains "We ordered early so we actually have some of the items that might be a little harder to come by as we get closer to thanksgiving."

She says they give away holiday food baskets so families can put festive holiday food on their tables each year.

Baxter tells us "So with that, turkey and all the fixings, or a ham for people who don't have a way to cook a turkey."

Some people pick up their holiday baskets before Thanksgiving, but the mass distribution is on December 1st.

Baxter says "We have a lot of meat, and dairy products, and fresh fruits and vegetables to help make that holiday special. And help supplement, especially when times are really tight."

Other food pantries like the Food Bank of Northern Nevada's registration spots for holiday meal kits are completely full. They said they filled 2,000 spots already, but these resources are not limited to the holidays.

Jocelyn Lantrip, the Director of Marketing for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada says "The food bank does have resources for everyday groceries absolutely, we distribute food through 150 partner agencies one of whom is Catholic Charities."

Additionally the Catholic Charities also does a Thanksgiving meal at their 4th and Valley location.
