A memo was filed with the City of Reno today detailing improvements the city is making to the area of West 7th Street.

According to the memo, the area has experienced higher crash rates than normal, due to its unique geometry and geography, combined with higher traffic volume and high travel speeds.

Neighbors in the area had voiced concerns to the city over the high rate of crashes.

Reno's Public Works Department and the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County (RTC) have been working to implement some solutions to make the area more safe.

Some of the projects already completed include installing flashing directional arrows on 7th Street between Downey Ave and Heights Drive and changes to the intersection of 7th Street and McCarran Boulevard that prevents conflicts between left-turning vehicles and pedestrians using the crosswalk.

Upcoming projects slated for the area include:

  • Installing a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon on W. 7th Street east of McCarran
  • New streetlights on West 7th Street at Sierra Highlands
  • Crosswalk improvements, a flashing school zone beacon and ADA sidewalk ramps at W. 7th Street near Robb Drive
  • Pavement and sidewalk rehabilitation on W. 7th Street including pavement restoration, upgraded ADA ramps and new bike lanes
