The Lyon County Sheriff's Office says student protests of ICE in Fernley on Friday were peaceful, despite concerns from some in the community.

The Sheriff's Office was contacted numerous times starting on Wednesday night by people reporting possible threats in relation to the protest, according to a release by the LCSO.

The possible threats reported included fights, shootings, and other violent behavior.

The threats were investigated, and the Sheriff's Office found them to be largely unsubstantiated.

Still, in response to the possible threats, an increased law enforcement presence was scheduled throughout Fernley and specifically in the areas of the planned protest.

On Friday, just before 10 a.m., around 50 students walked out of Fernley High School, and around 20 walked out of Silverland Middle School, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Students were carrying signs and flags, and no weapons or violence of any kind were observed.

After leaving their schools, students met at a roundabout in the area of Main Street in Fernley.

There was also a small group of counter-protesters in the area of the roundabout, the Sheriff's Office said. The counter-protestors also appeared to be students.

Sheriff’s Office personnel and members of the community reported slowed traffic in the area, but no other incidents associated with the protest.

The Sheriff's Office remained in the area through the afternoon, with most protestors dispersing by around 3 p.m.
