As the 2025 wildfire season approaches, NV Energy’s Power Safe NV team is stepping up its efforts to strengthen Nevada’s electrical infrastructure and improve safety during high fire risk months.
This effort aligns with Wildfire Awareness Month, a time when customers are reminded to get ready for possible power outages caused by Nevada’s typically hot and dry summer conditions.
“Reducing fire risks around our infrastructure and in our communities is a priority for NV Energy,” said Jesse Murray, Senior Vice President of Energy Delivery and Natural Disaster Protection. “We’re focusing on prevention, detection, and protection to prevent tomorrow’s natural disasters.”
To prevent wildfire ignition, NV Energy crews will be active throughout the summer, performing critical tasks such as clearing vegetation around electrical equipment, reconstructing overhead lines with fire-resistant materials, and relocating select power lines underground.
Despite these preventive efforts, the risk of wildfires cannot be completely eliminated.
To monitor potential fire starts, NV Energy relies on a network of advanced weather stations and wildfire detection cameras.
This system provides early alerts to both NV Energy and emergency responders, helping to initiate rapid responses.
In terms of protection, NV Energy uses three key strategies during high-risk periods.
First, Fire Season Settings are implemented on power lines in vulnerable areas, allowing them to shut off automatically if any disruption is detected.
Once triggered, crews must inspect the full line before restoring service.
Second, Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) involves planned outages in extreme fire conditions, with customers receiving advance notice and outage durations based on forecasted weather.
Lastly, Emergency De-Energization is employed when wildfires threaten NV Energy equipment, temporarily cutting power to safeguard responders and prevent further ignition.
Customers are advised to stay ready by keeping contact details current, enrolling in alert notifications through MyAccount, and preparing emergency kits and plans.
Those customers who depend on electric-powered medical devices are encouraged to explore the Green Cross customer program at NV Energy’s website.
