A new pilot program is aiming to help businesses in parts of Reno pay for security upgrades, with city leaders offering matching funds to support improvements tied to crime prevention.

The Reno Redevelopment Agency is launching its ReSecure Pilot initiative, inviting businesses and property owners in Redevelopment Areas one and two to apply for funding to upgrade safety features.

The program provides a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $5,000 per eligible business or property. Funds are reimbursed after the improvements are completed.

"ReSecure will provide additional support to businesses looking to strengthen their security features,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. “I encourage all eligible businesses and property owners to take full advantage of this valuable opportunity.”

Applications are open now through June 15, and must be submitted through the program’s registration link.

To qualify, upgrades must follow Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles. That approach focuses on how physical spaces can be designed to reduce opportunities for crime and improve safety. Key elements include natural surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement, and maintenance.

People from the Reno Police Department and City of Reno Code Enforcement trained in those assessments will help support the program’s goals.

The pilot follows feedback from businesses in those redevelopment areas that expressed interest in improving conditions around their properties to deter criminal activity.

Eligible upgrades include security cameras and related technology, lighting improvements, access control and building hardening, along with landscaping changes to improve visibility.

Funding for the program was approved in the redevelopment agency’s fiscal year 2026 budget, with $50,000 allocated for each redevelopment area, for a total of $100,000.

Selected applicants are expected to be notified by summer 2026.

Businesses and property owners can find more information on the redevelopment agency’s ReSecure Pilot page.
